Youth Hostel Schierke (DSFT Berlin)

The Schierke youth hostel is located at the foot of the Brocken and in the heart of the Harz National Park. An ideal starting point for excursions into the fantastic nature and the pretty towns of the Harz! Afterwards you can relax on our terrace with a view of the “Kalten Bode” or let yourself be pampered in the cafeteria. With its large sports hall, two bowling alleys and five seminar rooms, our modern youth hostel is perfect for families, school classes, conference and sports groups.

All areas relevant for testing meet the quality criteria of the label "Accessibility tested - barrier-free for people with walking disabilities".

Some accessibility information are listed below. Detailed information can be found in the evaluation report at the end of the text.

  • There are two unsigned parking spaces for people with disabilities behind the house (space size 350 cm x 500 cm).
  • From the parking lot you can reach the entrance via a path that is only partially easy to walk and drive on. The path is 110 cm long.
  • The entrance is steplessly accessible via a 6 m long ramp with a 4% gradient.
  • The reception is 91 cm high at its lowest point. There is an equivalent possibility of communication while sitting.
  • All rooms and areas that can be used by guests are accessible without steps.
  • The basement with bowling alley is step-free access from the outside. The billiard games room can only be reached via 3 steps.
  • All doors and passageways are at least 90 cm wide.
    Exception: Door to the bowling alley with 81 cm
  • There are height-adjustable tables in the dining room and cafeteria.
  • The house has an elevator.

Room 7 (multi-bedroom)

  • The manoeuvring spaces in front of essential immobile furnishings are at least 230 cm x 104 cm;
    to the right of the bed 290 cm x 150 cm, on the left the bed stands next to the wall. 
  • It is wheelchair accessible. 
  • A nursing bed cannot be provided.
  • The narrowest passage width in the room is 87 cm.

Room 8 (double bedroom)

  • The movement areas are:
    in front of essential immovable furnishings at least 300 cm x 211 cm;
    to the right of the bed 290 cm x 120 cm, to the left the bed is against the wall.
  • A nursing bed cannot be provided.

Sanitary room for rooms 7 and 8

  • The sanitary room is located in the middle between rooms 7 and 8 and can be properly locked by an appropriate locking mechanism (occupied signs are visible in the rooms).
  • The manoeuvring spaces in the sanitary room are:
    in front of the toilet 375 cm x 160 cm and in front of the washbasin 145 cm x 168 cm
    the toilet can be accessed from the right (dimensions: 135 cm x 66 cm)
  • There are handles that can be folded up on both sides.
  • The shower area at ground level is 150 cm x 150 cm.
  • A shower chair and horizontal handles are available.
  • The washbasin is wheelchair compatible and the mirror can be seen while standing or sitting.

  • There is no audio induction loop and no alarm in the building.
  • In the dining room and in the cafeteria there are tables with low background noises and bright and glare-free surroundings where there are no lamps standing or hanging.
  • In rooms 7 and 8 there is a freely available electrical outlet near the bed.
  • A television set with teletext is available in the TV room 004, but not in the rooms.
  • WIFI access is subject to a charge.

  • Assistance dogs are allowed.
  • The entrance area is visually rich in contrast.
  • Rooms and corridors are brightly lit. There are several identical corridor doors in the corridor on the ground floor between the reception and the rooms, which must be opened self-acting.
  • General information is not available in Braille or prismatic writing.
  • The boundary of the sidewalk can be tactilely detected outdoors. There are no floor indicators.

  • Business cards/brochures with the address and telephone number of the host are visibly displayed at the reception desk.

  • There is no information in easy language and no colored or pictorial guidance system.
