Youth Hostel Ilmenau (Etzold)

The university town of Ilmenau, also known as the “Town of Goethe”, brings together tradition and modernity, nature, technology and culture with the tranquillity of a friendly and welcoming small town. Ilmenau’s central location and excellent motorway connections make it the ideal starting point for trips to Thuringia’s most exciting and attractive tourist destinations. Ilmenau Youth Hostel offers its guests 130 beds in rooms containing two, four or six beds. All rooms contain a separate shower and toilet. People with disabilities are more than welcome at our youth hostel! There are two barrier-free rooms for wheelchair users on the ground floor. We also offer other rooms with barrier-free interiors that provide easier access for people and groups with disabilities.

Some information on accessibility are listed below. For detailed information please see the evaluation report.

  • There is one unmarked parking space for people with disabilities (parking space size: 350 cm x 500 cm).
  • Nearby is the bus stop "Jugendherberge" – bus line A.
  • The path in front of the entrance is easy to walk and drive on.
  • The building is steplessly accessible.
  • All evaluated rooms and facilities available to the guests are steplessly accessible at ground level.
  • All evaluated passageways/doors available to the guests are at least 90 cm wide.
  • Exception: the fire door to rooms 1-4 is 88 cm wide.
  • The reception desk is 77 cm high at its lowest point. There is another, equivalent communication possibility while in a sitting position.
  • There are wheelchair accessible tables in the dining room (maximum height 80 cm, wheelchair accessible at a height of 67 cm and a depth of 30 cm).

Room 1 and 3 (double bedroom/1st floor)

  • There are three other identical rooms.
  • The maneuvering spaces are:
    in front of essential immobile furnishings (e.g. wardrobe) 150 cm x 150 cm;
    left of the bed 110 cm x 190 cm;
    right of the bed 110 cm x 190 cm.
  • The bed is 52 cm high and wheelchair accessible.
  • A nursing bed cannot be provded.
  • The maneuvering spaces in the bathroom are:
    in front of/behind the door at least 145 cm x 145 cm;
    in front of the toilet and in front of the washbasin at least 150 cm x 150 cm;
    left of the toilet 90 cm x 62 cm and right of the toilet 100 cm x 62 cm.
  • There is a handle which can be folded up on the right side of the toilet. A hanging handle on the ceiling can be positioned differently on the toilet and shower.
  • The washbasin is wheelchair accessible.
  • The shower is accessible without thresholds.
  • The manoeuvring space in the shower is 120 cm x 120 cm.
  • A shower seat is available or can be provided if required.
  • There are horizontally mounted grab handles in the shower.
  • An alarm trigger is present.

Public toilet

  • There is a public toilet, which can be accessed via a maximum of one step and has a door width of at least 70 cm.
  • There is no public toilet designed for people with disabilities.

  • There is no clearly visible alarm.
  • There is no audio induction loop.
  • In the dining room there are tables with bright and glare-free lighting, on which there are no lamps standing or hanging that restrict the field of vision or eye contact.
  • There is a seating area with low background noises (e.g. seating corner, separate room).

Room 1 and 3 (double bedroom)

  • There is at least one electrical outlet available near the bed.
  • The ringing or knocking on the door is not indicated by a flashing signal which can be perceived in all rooms.
  • WiFi is offered.
