UNESCO World Heritage in Saxony-Anhalt
Saxony-Anhalt is proud of its heritage, and with good reason: we have a unique concentration of significant landmarks in German and European history. This is where you will find fascinating sites in intellectual history. Our legacy is internationally renowned: UNESCO has awarded five cultural sites, a biosphere reserve and various precious documents World Heritage status. The Inspiring Six are testament to the proximity and interconnections between the cultural heritage in the area.

Discover more about The Inspiring Six: The city of Dessau is where the BAUHAUS thrived. During the seven years it was active, the School of Art and Design left behind a powerful architectural legacy. The GARDEN KINGDOM OF DESSAU-WÖRLITZ is famed for its superb landscape design and is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll in tranquil surroundings. The NEBRA SKY DISC is the world's oldest known physical representation of the cosmos. Saxony-Anhalt is closely tied to the Reformation and the life and work of Martin Luther. Authentic historical locations in WITTENBERG and EISLEBEN bring the history of the Reformation and the world of Luther to life. The CATHEDRAL OF NAUMBURG is a masterpiece of human creation. It stands majestically amongst the hilly landscape between Saale and Unstrut and is one of most significant cultural monuments of the High Middle Ages. QUEDLINBURG boasts winding alleyways, half-timbered houses dating from different eras, medieval squares, modern art housed behind centuries-old walls, and the Abbey with its castle and Romanesque Collegiate Church.

Magdeburg – Where the Middle Ages and Modernity Meet
In Magdeburg, trees grow on Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s Green Citadel, and opposite stands Magdeburg Cathedral, a 500-year-old landmark. Historical walls that reflect 1,200 years of eventful history open out onto views of the Elbe. The river Elbe in Magdeburg takes you on a journey through time that goes as far back as the Middle Ages. Back then, the palace, surrounded by thick ramparts, was home to knights and robbers. Magdeburg is a unique combination of old and new.

Natural pleasure – breathe deeply in Saxony-Anhalt

Unique landscapes and a well-developed network of routes for hikers, cyclists, water sports enthusiasts and equestrians make Saxony-Anhalt a prime address for active holidaymakers and nature lovers. Cyclists can ride through Saxony-Anhalt on 18 trans-regional bicycle trails. The Elbe Cycle Route, the most popular long-distance bicycle trails in Germany, is one of the family-friendly routes. Athletically ambitious mountain bikers will find a suitable tour in the Harz Mountain region. The World Heritage region between Dessau-Roßlau and Lutherstadt Wittenberg is recommended for recreational cyclists interested in culture. Three UNESCO-World Heritage Sites are concentrated in a very small area there: the Bauhaus building and the Masters’ Houses in Dessau, the Luther memorials in Wittenberg and the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz.

Particularly hiking fans get their money’s worth in the Harz region where they will find a dense network of hiking trails - among them the 94 kilometer long “Harzer-Hexen-Stieg” (Harz Witches’ Trail) and the Hiking Trail along the "Green Belt". Pilgrims are welcome in Saxony-Anhalt on the St. James Pilgrimage Trail as well as on the Luther Trail between the Luther cities Eisleben, Mansfeld and Wittenberg.

The close to nature-courses of the Elbe, Saale, Unstrut and Havel rivers are areas for those who like to canoe along waters from the "blue ribbon". The Altmark region in Northern Saxony-Anhalt is an ideal destination for those who love horses. There is one of the largest equestrian hiking networks in Germany. The state’s large-protected nature reserves such as the Harz National Park or the Middle Elbe UNESCO Biosphere Reserve should be noted for nature observations.
