Tourist information Wernigerode

Tourist information Wernigerode (Manuela Fischer)

Picturesquely embedded in the charming low mountain range landscape of the Harz mountains, Wernigerode lies at an altitude of 240 m above sea level.

The well-preserved medieval town centre with its colourful half-timbered buildings from six centuries, narrow alleys, beautiful gardens and idyllic corners characterise the face of the town first mentioned in 1121.

The Wernigerode® Castle, the centre of 19th century art and cultural history, rises majestically high above the city.

Wernigerode is an ideal starting point for excursions and hiking tours to the Harz mountains. The narrow-gauge railways in the Harz region offer pure railway romance, steamy and puffing to the 1,141 m high Brocken.
