Church St. Marien

Church St. Marien (Anne Wilken)

The 80 metre high tower of St. Mary's Church is a landmark of the Hanseatic city of Wismar that can be seen from afar. Construction of the church began around 1270. During the Middle Ages the tower served as an orientation sign for ships calling at Wismar. In the 2nd World War the Church of St. Mary was severely damaged in 1945 and then demolished to the tower in 1960. Until then it was considered one of the most beautiful brick churches in northern Germany.

A 3D film presentation shows the origins and techniques of Gothic brick building. The figure of Bruno Brick vividly explains for all age groups the way from clay, the building material of the church, to the firing of the shaped bricks to the masonry construction.
