The Max Ernst Museum Brühl des LVR is the only museum dedicated to the  life and work of the seminal artist, image poet, and cosmopolitan Max  Ernst (1891–1976). The collection spans 70 years of one of the most  important, versatile, and fascinating
artists of the 20th century: his time in Brühl and Bonn, his Dadaist activities in the
Rhineland, his contributions to the Surrealist movement in France, his exile in the USA,
and finally his return to Europe in 1953.

  • There are two marked parking spaces for people with disabilities at the museum (parking space size: 280 cm x 430 cm). 
  • The path from the parking lot at the museum to the side entrance is 25 m long. It is easy to walk and drive on and has a maximum longitudinal gradient of 4% over a distance of 10 meters. 
  • In addition, there are two marked parking spaces for people with disabilities (parking space size: 328 cm x 900 cm) at the Fantasy Laboratory.
  • Access to the museum is stepless via the side entrance with elevator.
  • The cabin size in the elevator at the side entrance (from the basement to the ground floor/1st floor) is 110 cm x 140 cm. 
  • The museum cash desk is 115 cm high and there is an equivalent communication facility for seated visitors.
  • All public doors and passageways are at least 90 cm high. 
  • All rooms that can be used by guests and are elevated are accessible at ground level or by elevator.
  • The cabin size in the elevator at the main entrance (from the ground floor to the 1st/2nd floor) is 166 cm x 206 cm.
  • The exhibits in the exhibition rooms and the associated information can mainly be viewed and read while seated.
  • There are wheelchair-accessible tables in the museum café.
  • Guided tours are offered for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users. Seating is available during the tour. The entire route is steplessly accessible for wheelchair users. Advance booking is required.

Public toilets for people with disabilities 

  • The manoeuvring spaces in the WC in the basement are:
    64 cm x 72 cm to the left of the WC, 86 cm x 72 cm to the right;
    in front of the WC at least 150 cm x 150 cm; in front of the washbasin 117 cm x 200 cm.
  • The manoeuvring spaces in the WC on the 2nd floor are:
    81 cm x 70 cm to the left of the WC, 116 cm x 70 cm to the right;
    at least 150 cm x 150 cm in front of the WC and washbasin. 
  • The Fantasie laboratory is located in a separate building 700 m away.
  • The manoeuvring spaces are:  
    to the left of the WC at least 90 cm x 70 cm, to the right 62 cm x 70 cm;
    at least 150 cm x 150 cm in front of the toilet and washbasin. 

The following applies in all WCs for people with disabilities:

  • The grab rail can be flipped-up. 
  • The sink is wheelchair compatible.  and the mirror can be seen while standing or sitting. 
  • An alarm release is available.

  • There is a visibly perceptible alarm in the exhibition rooms.
  • An audio induction loop is not available.
  • There are tables in the museum café with bright and glare-free surroundings at which there are no lamps standing or hanging that interfere with eye contact. Areas with low background noises are present.
  • In the elevators, the outgoing emergency call is not displayed visibly. Alternatively, stairs are available.
  • Information on the exhibits is provided in writing in the exhibition.
  • Guided tours for people with hearing disabilities and deaf people are offered in sign language. A reservation is desired.

  • Assistance dogs are allowed.
  • The main entrance is not visually rich in contrast and cannot be recognised by a tactile floor covering.
  • The staircase at the entrance has five low-contrast steps and handrails on both sides. There is no visual or tactile contrast between the flooring and the stairways. Alternatively, there is a handicap entrance with elevator.
  • Glass doors are not provided with safety markings.
  • In the exhibition, the well-lit exhibits contrast visually with their surroundings and information is conveyed in writing. There is an Audio Guide.
  • Essential walkways in the exhibition rooms are not visually rich in contrast or tactilely detectable. There are no obstacles, e.g. objects protruding into the path/space.
  • The controls in the elevators can be detected tactilely. An outgoing emergency call is confirmed audibly . The stop positions are not announced by speech. Alternatively, staircases with handrails on both sides are available.
  • Rooms and corridors are brightly lit.
  • Signage is not available in Braille or prismatic lettering.
  • The outdoor paths have no floor indicators or sidewalk boundaries.
  • Guided tours for visually impaired and blind people are offered. During the guided tour, tactile models are integrated. A reservation is desired. 
  • An audio guide is available which can be operated independently by people with visual impairments / blind people.
