Alternative Bear Park® Worbis (Stiftung für Bären)

The Alternative Bear Park Worbis is a wildlife and species conservation project of the FOUNDATION for BEARS- Wildlife and Species Conservation. As Germany's first bear sanctuary, the facility offers abused bears, wolves and lynxes a near-natural home. Here, visitors can experience a bit of nature and observe wild animals in their behavior. The paths of the facility are barrier-free as well as a barrier-free designed guest room.

All areas relevant for testing meet the quality criteria of the label "Accessibility certified - partially accessible for people with walking disabilities".  

Some information on accessibility are listed below. Detailed information can be found in the evaluation report at the end of the text.  

  • There are four marked parking spaces for people with disabilities.  The entrance is about 20 m away.
  • The main parking lot is about 150 m from the entrance. It is easy to walk and drive on and has a maximum longitudinal slope of 9% over a distance of 15 meters. 
  • The main entrance is accessible without steps. The transition to the park is step-free via a ramp. The ramp has a maximum slope of 20% and a total length of 5 m. 
  • The counter in the cashier area is 110 cm. 
  • The park is located on topographically challenging terrain with longitudinal slopes ranging from 6% to 23%. The cross slope is 5-8% over 10 m. The tour for people with limited mobility is recommended as follows: From the ticket office door, follow the path to the right until you reach the ‘Noah's Ark’ play ship. Then follow the same path back to the ticket office and continue along the circular path to the area with the totem poles. From there, turn around and walk back to the ticket office. These paths have only a 9% slope for 150 meters.  For people with limited mobility, the guided tours with the bear-mobile are also offered - Wheelchair users must be able to transfer.
  • The main paths through the park are mostly easy to walk and drive on.
  • The paths in the farm garden are not easy to walk and drive on and have a maximum longitudinal slope of 18% over a distance of 20 meters. 
  • All doorways/passages that can be used by guests and are raised are at least 87 cm wide.
  • Seating is provided.
  • Experience stations and information boards can be viewed and read mainly while seated.
  • The Bear Bistro is accessible via a ramp (100 cm wide, 60 cm long).. The counter in the outdoor area of the bistro is 101 cm high and in the indoor area 114 cm high. There are wheelchair accessible tables in the Bear Bistro.
  • The play area is not wheelchair accessible.
  • There are two public toilets for people with disabilities, which are accessible from one side (minimum 80 cm). There is a folding grab rail on the accessible side of the toilet. 
  • Guided tours are available for wheelchair users and people with walking disabilities using the Bear Mobile. Pre-registration for the tour is required. 
  • The entire route of the guided tour is step-free for wheelchair users.

  • There is no audio induction loop system available.
  • In the bear park, information and the experience stations are provided in writing. 
  • In the bear bistro, there are tables with bright and glare-free lighting where there are no lamps or hanging lamps that interfere with the field of vision or eye contact. 
  • Outside, there are seating areas with low ambient noise.

  • Assistance dogs are allowed except to the farm.
  • The entrance area is not visually contrasting to the surroundings.
  • Paths do not have visually contrasting or tactilely detectable walkway boundaries, except in the farm garden.  
  • Experience stations and information panels are mostly visually contrasting. A tactile park map is available. 
  • Stair treads are not visually contrasting. Stairs have at least one handrail on one side.
  • Menu writing at the Bear Bistro is unadorned and visually contrasting. 
  • Guided tours are available for people with visual impairments and for blind people. Advance registration for the tour is required. During the tours, exhibits are integrated for touch.

  • The name and logo of the bear park are clearly recognizable from the outside.
  • The destinations of the trails are mostly within sight. There are no trail signs at a constantly visible distance. 
  • In the bear park experience stations and information boards are partially photo-realistic representation and conveyed in writing, but not in easy language.  
  • In the Bear Bistro there is a menu with pictures on request. The dishes are not visibly presented (buffet, counter).
