All areas relevant for testing meet the quality criteria of the label "Accessibility tested - accessible for people with walking disabilities and partially accessible for wheelchair users".
Some information on accessibility are listed below. For detailed information please see the evaluation report at the end of the text.
- There are seven marked parking spaces available for people with disabilities (parking space size: 400 cm x 450 cm; distance to entrance "Barnstorfer Ring" 100 m, distance to entrance "Trotzenburg" 400 m).
- From the car park and the public transport bus stop, you can get to the entrance via an easily accessible path.
- Access to the zoo is possible without thresholds or steps.
- All rooms that can be used and raised by guests are accessible at ground level or via ramps (maximum longitudinal gradient 6 %). Door thresholds are max. 1.5 cm high (exception: public toilet for people with disabilities at the Löwenrondell with a 3 cm high door threshold).
- All passageways/doors are at least 90 cm wide (except for the WC door "Lodge" with 85 cm).
- The main paths to the animal enclosures are paved or water-bound paths. All main paths are easy to walk and drive on.
- The exhibits are predominately visiblewhile standing and sitting.
- In the restaurant "Lodge" there are wheelchair accessible tables, in the dining room DARWINEUM there are no.
- Aids available: wheelchairs, Zoo Express (with ramp)
- Guided tours for people with walking disabilities and wheelchair users are offered.
- Special trained guides make sure that guests with walking disabilities and wheelchair users can take part in any guided tour and their concerns will be dealt with.
Toilet for people with disabilities
- In the sanitary rooms the manoeuvring spaces are:
in the DARWINEUM: to the right and left of the toilet (width x depth) at least 95 cm x 70 cm, in front of the toilet, the washbasin and the door at least 150 cm x 150 cm;
"Lodge": to the right of the toilet 47 cm x 70 cm, to the left 150 cm x 70 cm, in front of the toilet 200 cm x 80 cm, in front of the washbasin and the door min. 150 cm x 150 cm;
"Lion roundel": to the right of the toilet 84 cm x 70 cm, to the left 92 cm x 70 cm, in front of the toilet, the washbasin and the door min. 150 cm x 150 cm. - Folding handles are provided on both sides of the WCs.
- The washbasins is wheelchair compatible and the mirrors can be seen while standing or sitting.
- Alarm triggers are available.

- There is no audio induction loop.

- Guided tours are offered for people with hearing impairment, but not for deaf people.
- In the restaurant "Lodge" and in the dining room "Darwineum" there are tables with bright and glare-free lighting, on which there are no lamps standing or hanging that interfere with the field of vision or eye contact.

- Assistance dogs may be brought on a leash.
- The house signage is designed in clearly legible, contrasting font.
- The entrance door to the "Darwineum" is a rotating door, but it can be set to a permanent and continuous opening.
- Rooms and corridors are brightly lit.
- External paths usually have visually contrasting and tactilely detectable sidewalk boundaries.
- The information on the animals is visually rich in contrast.Information is not available in Braille or prismatic font.
- Guided tours are offered for visually impaired people and blind people. During the guided tours, exhibits are integrated for touching.
