Zeitz Town Hall

Zeitz Town Hall

Zeitz Town Hall

Built between 1505 and 1509, the town hall in the heart of the city is a real gem. It is considered the city's landmark and offers beautiful details to explore, including the magnificently decorated Peace Hall (advance booking required). The 52-metre-high town hall tower was built during the extension work between 1905 and 1909. Those who are fit enough can climb to the top. From here, you have a unique view over the roofs of the city and, on a clear day, you can even see the Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig.

Incidentally, Dr Friedrich Martin Luther, a great-grandson of Luther, served as the ‘first mayor’ in the old part of the building from 1726 to 1742.

The Gothic Hall on the upper floor is part of the historic town hall in Zeitz, the Gothic section of which was built between 1505 and 1509.

The historic nail column is also located here. It was found in Moritzburg Castle. The war emblem with ‘Saint Michael’ at the top and the city coat of arms was donated in 1916 by Rossner, a mill owner from Zeitz. In reference to the Wars of Liberation, ‘I gave gold for iron,’ the nail column was once used for monetary donations. Donors were allowed to immortalise themselves with a nail in the wooden column. The price for gold nails was ten marks, for silver nails two marks and for iron nails 20 pfennigs. Small plaques with inscriptions from individuals, companies or associations could also be attached. The money collected was used for war welfare. Donors entered their names in a special book.

The upper floor of the town hall is accessible via the side entrance and a platform lift without steps.
