Füssen - the romantic soul of Bavaria
Füssen, at the crossroads of the Romantic Road and the German Alpine Road, delights with its medieval Old Town, High Castle and the former St. Mang abbey. Colorful rooftops and winding lanes blend history and scenery. Museums with historic lutes and violins reflect its musical heritage. The city of Füssen is the southern-most end and climax of the famous German Romantic Road and is an internationally renowned holiday resort at the Bavarian Alpine foothills. Its location in the heart of one of Bavaria’s most charming hill and lake districts make it the ideal starting point for visits to King Ludwig II. fairy tale castle of Neuschwanstein as well as Hohenschwangau castle at only 4 miles distance. The Dream King’s second castle, Linderhof, as well as the Wieskirche (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, can be reached by the German Alpine Road) are only 45 Min. car drive away. Füssens medieval town center rises high above the banks of the river Lech and offers a unique setting for leisurely shopping strolls or explorations into past centuries. Sightseeing highlights: the High Castle overlooking the town, the Füssen Heritage Museum inside the former Benedictine monastery of St Mang with a great collection of historic lutes and violins and splendid Baroque halls, and in summer the ship-roundtrips on Lake Forggensee with a real great panorama view to Neuschwanstein Castle and the surrounding Alpine mountain range.
