Railroad bike path Sankt Wendeler Land (Handbiketour)
Railroad bike path
(Frank Rauber)
Where once railroads pulled their wagons over the tracks, today runs the new family-friendly railroad bike path Sankt Wendeler Land. With a length of 30 kilometers and a flat course, it connects the 3 communities of Freisen, Nohfelden and Nonnweiler, each of which welcomes cyclists with an impressive entrance gate. The starting point is in Freisen, from where there is also a direct connection to the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Path to Kusel. There are a total of 17 rest stops along the way, inviting you to linger and rest, while the youngest cyclists can let off steam on the playground equipment in railroad design. In addition, you can expand your knowledge of railroad history and natural landscapes with the help of the information boards along the way.

Cycle path
- The path has a length of 30.4 km and runs in northern Saarland largely on a former railroad line through the district of St. Wendel. It touches three municipalities: Freisen, Nohfelden and Nonnweiler. It is possible to "hop on" at various places along the route and only cycle parts of the route.
- The cycle path has no sleepers and is mostly 300 cm wide.
- There are some ascents and descents. The steepest gradient is 10-12% over a length of 200 m.
- The surface consists of asphalt and is easy to ride on.
- An unsecured crossing of a road is necessary. In front of it there is a circulating barrier with 300 cm x 350 cm manoeuvring space between the barriers.
- The cycle path is also designated for walkers, skaters and other user groups.
- There are numerous seating and rest areas along the path.
- The path is clearly, uniformly and continuously signposted.
- At crossroads, junctions and all rest areas along the cycle path there are signposts with place names and kilometers.
- There is an e-bike charging station at the Türkismühle train stop, roughly in the middle of the cycle path. There are further charging stations for e-bikes near the cycle path.
- Descriptions of the cycle route are available in printed form and on an accessible website.
Parking / public transport
- There are numerous parking facilities in Freisen and Nonnweiler as well as the entry and exit points close to the cycle path. Detailed information on marked parking spaces for people with disabilities and access to the cycle path can be found in the test report.
