Hamburger Kunsthalle

Hamburger Kunsthalle (Anastasia Panagiotopulu)

The three distinctive buildings of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, located near the Alster, house one of the most important public art collections in Germany. The Kunsthalle is one of the few houses that offer a tour through eight centuries of art history.

More than 700 works are on permanent display. The main focus is on North German medieval painting with the altars of Master Bertram and Master Francke, 17th-century Dutch painting, 19th-century German painting with the extensive groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann, and classical modernism with works by Max Beckmann, Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Edvard Munch and Paul Klee. In the area of contemporary art, you will find artists from the excellent collection - such as Bruce Nauman, Gerhard Richter, Rosemarie Trockel and Sigmar Polke.

In addition to the collection, the Hamburger Kunsthalle attracts international attention with top-class special exhibitions. One focus of the work is on communicating the museum's content to all age groups.
