Camping in Germany
Germany? Land of camping!
Camping is a phenomenon. Practised for generations and still very much in fashion, even in the digital age. Or is it precisely because of the digital age? Either way, camping is growing in popularity, especially in Germany. More and more people, including many young people and newbies, are enjoying getting closer to nature again, finding holidays in the great outdoors cool – the key words being 'van life'.
From the campervan straight into the waves
North Sea or Baltic Sea, that is the question! Our answer: well, there are excellent campsites on both coasts, and some even on the water. But there are some differences. The North Sea boasts wild waves, vast expanses and the Wadden Sea, while the Baltic Sea offers long sandy beaches, warmer waves and that beach chair feeling. But the sounds of the sea and the calls of seagulls ensure a relaxing atmosphere all around. With nothing but vast oceans stretching as far as the eye can see, everything else seems quite insignificant anyway...
- There's a space! At Grönwohld Camping , located between Kiel and Eckernförde, there's plenty of space – both along the miles of natural Baltic Coast, and for this campsite's 600 or so pitches. Alternatively, guests can spend the night in holiday homes and laid-back wooden 'sleeping cubes'.
Urban holidays
Traditionally, the city is a hub of cultural, social and tourist life. There's plenty for adventurous travellers to experience! It's an added bonus that there are a growing number of campsites in urban areas, usually with attractive public transport links. It's a quick trip to the museum, theatre or shops, but you're also just as close to the peace and quiet of the campsite, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
- The Campingpark Erfurt only opened in 2020, but it has already accumulated a long list of awards, including 'Best campsite in Thuringia'. There are many reasons for such an honour: seven minutes by bus to the city centre, friendly staff, its focus on environmental protection and much more.
Splashing around
"When I see the lake, I no longer need the sea." This saying may not be new, but it still rings true. And it also applies to rivers, and especially campers, who often prefer holidays right on the waterfront. No wonder, given the endless possibilities: swimming and splashing around in refreshing water! Cruising around in a canoe, on a stand up paddle board or pedalo! Fishing! Or simply relaxing in a camping chair and gazing out at the view.
- The Moselle is one of Germany's most impressive river landscapes. The four-star Häppy Life Camping site in Burgen, located on the river, is also very impressive and offers much more than 'just' pitches and cabins: a beach club, SUP rental, adventure golf and much more. Everything you need for a happy camper life.
- Decisions, decisions! Frolicking around all day on the beach at Lake Constance, or exploring the surrounding area on a rental e-bike? Linger on the village square of the top-class Klausenhorn eco-campsite, or join a yoga class? And then there's the question of where to sleep! Pitch up your tent, or get cosy in a trailer or sleeping barrel? There's nothing for it but to extend your trip.
Getting started is easy!
When preparing for your first camping trip, it's important to consider the time of year and type of camping. Camping by the lake in summer is not the same as a short van trip to the snowy mountains. But don't worry: with the right planning, aided by guides and apps, you can't go far wrong. Worst case scenario, you can buy something at the camping shop or ask your neighbours for help.
