Buchheim Museum of Imagination Bernried

The collections of Lothar-Günther Buchheim in an exhibition space of 3,200 square metres by Lake Starnberg make for an extraordinarily diverse and unique mix that appeals to all the senses.

The Buchheim Museum follows an unusual approach, presenting themed collections that would not normally be seen together under the same roof. The focus is on Expressionist art, including paintings, watercolours, drawings and prints by Ernst Leo Kirchner, Max Beckmann and other artists. Highly regarded the world over, this collection invites visitors to follow the timeline of Expressionist art all the way up to the 1920s.

What's more, the Buchheim Museum is also considered to be a museum dedicated to ethnology since it boasts an ample array of carousel animals, sculptures, masks and cultural items from Africa, shadow puppets from Indonesia, ink drawings from China, wood carvings from Japan and other works of art. The museum building is also incorporated into the surrounding parkland. A 12-metre-long jetty floating above the lake makes for a stunning architectural focal point. Opening times: April to October: Tuesday to Sunday 10 am–6 pm, November to March: Tuesday to Sunday 10 am–5 pm
