The Württemberg wine region: many shades of red

The majority (80 per cent) of Württemberg's wines are red, making it the biggest producer of red wine in Germany. A large part (71 per cent) of the area under vine is situated on slopes or steep hillsides, some of which have a 20 per cent gradient, making them more difficult to cultivate. Württemberg is characterised by a particularly broad range of grape varieties and is one of the few places where lemberger and trollinger are grown. Many of the new varieties that have become important to German wine-growing such as dornfelder come from Württemberg.

Our family-run hotel has 53 rooms with bath/shower & WC, direct-dial telephone, satellite TV, & wireless internet. There are four price categories and each room is decorated in its own individual style. The varied menu features Swabian and international dishes plus a wide selection of delicious wines.

Weinstadt Hotel is located in the idyllic wine village of Beutelsbach. All its bedrooms are spacious and well-appointed. Restaurant Krone serves Swabian specialities and French cuisine. Its philosophy is to use exclusively fresh, authentic natural products. Swabian wine weekends include overnight accommodation and breakfast, a Swabian meal and a 1/4 litre of wine.

Wine presses are at every turn in this region: there were once eight between Öhringen and Pfedelbach. They had names such as the priest's press, the bird's press and the juniper press. Although most have vanished and their pressing stones are all that is left, a walking trail links their former locations.

Georg Christian von Kessler founded Germany's first sekt winery in Esslingen on the river Neckar on 1 July 1826 after learning how to make sparkling wine at the Veuve Cliquot estate in the Champagne region. In the first ten years, Kessler sold around half a million bottles.
