Hamburg, Planten un Blomen Park – nightly light and water show

Planten un Blomen Park, Hamburg. The people's favourite park.

A leafy oasis in the heart of Hamburg, Planten un Blomen Park offers 47 hectares of fountains, lawns and floral displays. There is no charge to get in, and you're sure to leave feeling relaxed.

A park "for birds, for pleasure and for the people of Hamburg" was established on the site in 1930, followed in 1935 by a horticultural exhibition called Planten un Blomen (local dialect for plants and flowers), the name which remains to this day. In the centre of the Planten un Blomen Park stands an array of listed tropical hothouses retained from the previous botanical gardens. The park's traditional rose garden, occupying 5,000 square metres, offers a different kind of calm and tranquillity. The flowerbeds with box hedging are the perfect backdrop for the classical concerts that are performed here every day throughout the summer season. There is also an apothecary garden where visitors can learn about the healing powers of plants. Stressed city dwellers love nothing more than sitting by the fountains during the water and light shows. In 1985 work began on the ramparts, and a delightful Japanese garden with a teahouse was added, the largest of its kind in Europe. Children can expend their energy in the fun-packed playground, while visitors of all ages can go ice skating in winter. The huge rink is one of the largest outdoor rinks in the world and is used by roller skaters and bladers in summer. Located in the south-west tip, the Museum of Hamburg History tells the story of the city from its origins around 800 AD to the present day. Nearby attractions: when it opened 100 years ago Hagenbeck Zoo was the first to dispense with caged enclosures and paved the way for zoo keeping as we know it today. With 25 hectares of varied countryside and 7km of marked trails, it is now a themed family attraction offering an unforgettable experience for all. The Speicherstadt district from the late 19th century remains to this day the largest warehouse complex in the world. In 1991 the buildings came under a preservation order. In St. Pauli, the Landungsbrücken landing stages – the 'gateway to the world' – is where barges, sightseeing boats and museum ships set off on harbour tours.

There is no doubt that the three buildings belonging to the Hamburg Kunsthalle house one of the most important public art collections in Germany: perhaps the best place to discover connections, developments and trends in seven centuries of art history. The permanent exhibition of more than 700 works and alternating displays from the museum's holdings offer a unique insight into art from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Every one of the museum's collections is important in its own right but in combination they have an immense impact. The museum presents the medieval altars of Master Bertram and Master Francke, 17th century Dutch paintings and 19th century German paintings with extensive groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann. Works of the Classical Modernist period include paintings and sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz and Max Ernst. The contemporary art section features alternating exhibitions, which have included Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Mona Hatoum and Jenny Holzer. The Department of Prints and Drawings comprises more than 120,000 works and is a museum in its own right. The Kunsthalle also runs the 'Museum At Home' initiative where art historians give their expert opinion on paintings (on canvas and wood), drawings and prints for a small fee.

Hamburg Film Festival genuinely is for ordinary folk. For ten days every autumn, around 140 German and international feature films and documentaries are screened in ten locations and seen by over 40,000 fans. All are world, European or German premieres, and most are introduced by the film makers themselves, Q&A included.

The programme, which ranges from cinematically challenging arthouse movies to success-bound mainstream cinema, is divided into ten permanent sections as well as others that change year by year. Stars such as Clint Eastwood, Jodie Foster, Christoph Waltz and Julian Schnabel, Dogme-founder Lars von Trier and German directors Wim Wenders, Fatih Akin, Andreas Dresen and Tom Tykwer show just how diverse a festival this is. The organisers also focus their attention on certain specific aspects. For example, the Three Colours Green section examines themes such as nuclear phase-out, renewable energies and the mobility of the future. Northern Lights presents feature films and documentaries from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Eurovisuell concentrates on box-office hits from other European countries, and the Deluxe series shows classic films from a different country every year. Hamburg traditionally also reserves a starring role for young directors and their debut works. The film festival for children and young people, known as Michel, shows – in association with Frankfurt's LUCAS Children's Film Festival – German and international features and animations for the next generation of cinema-goers.

The people of Hamburg know how to party. Not once but three times a year they team up with visitors for northern Germany's biggest funfair – which lasts a whole 30 days. For almost a month in spring, summer and winter, people flock to Heiligengeistfeld in Hamburg to enjoy fairground rides, food and drink, and shows. There are reduced prices for families on Wednesdays – and attention turns skywards on Fridays for the massive fireworks display.
