From its source located on the Rothaarsteig Trail, we follow the Lahn river for 288 kilometres until we reach its mouth on the Rheinsteig Trail. Our journey along this path is guaranteed to be full of amazing outdoor adventures.

Alongside meadows and forests, it is the places on the Lahnwanderweg Trail that tell the most extraordinary tales. We walk through the university town of Marburg, where the Brothers Grimm of fairytale fame studied. In Gießen, we visit the Mathematikum science museum and learn a thing or two along the way. In Limburg, we marvel at the magnificent cathedral on the hill overlooking the Lahn. In Wetzlar, where the Werther opera is based, we visit the Lottehaus museum which was frequented by Goethe back when it was the residence of Charlotte Buff. What is there to drink on the Lahnwanderweg Trail? It has to be mineral water from the world-famous Staatl. Fachingen and Selters brands. Before we reach the Rhine, we ramble through the imposing Ruppertsklamm gorge. And we bid a final farewell to the Lahn river in Lahnstein.

TIP: Bad Ems

Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:

"In the 19th century, this spa town was a famous international bathing resort. Visitors to Bad Ems included Russian tsars, Richard Wagner and Dostoyevsky. A trip to Bad Ems is still a highlight today."
