Old Masters and New Masters Galleries Dresden

With some 750 masterpieces from the 15th to 18th centuries on display, this art gallery is home to some of the most famous collections of artwork in the world.

Even a young Johann Wolfgang Goethe marvelled at the masterpieces, having supposedly exclaimed "My amazement goes beyond words!" after his visit to the Dresden Art Gallery. And the reaction of visitors is much the same to this day. That's true whether they look around the Old Masters Gallery in the Semper Building at Zwinger Palace or the New Masters Gallery, a separate exhibition created in 1965 at the Albertinum on Brühl's Terrace. Works from the Italian Renaissance and Dutch and Flemish paintings from the 17th centuries are amongst the highlights of the collection at the art gallery. Raphael's "Sistine Madonna", though, is the real star of the show.

The New Masters Gallery is one of the most important museums dedicated to modern art in the whole of Germany. Its collection of some 2,500 paintings from the 19th and 20th century includes stunning artwork from the German Romantic, Biedermeier and Bourgeois Realism eras as well as German Impressionism and German Expressionism. Opening times: Tuesday to Thursday: 10 am–6 pm
