There is no doubt that the three buildings belonging to the Hamburg Kunsthalle house one of the most important public art collections in Germany: perhaps the best place to discover connections, developments and trends in seven centuries of art history. The permanent exhibition of more than 700 works and alternating displays from the museum's holdings offer a unique insight into art from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Every one of the museum's collections is important in its own right but in combination they have an immense impact. The museum presents the medieval altars of Master Bertram and Master Francke, 17th century Dutch paintings and 19th century German paintings with extensive groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann. Works of the Classical Modernist period include paintings and sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz and Max Ernst. The contemporary art section features alternating exhibitions, which have included Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Mona Hatoum and Jenny Holzer. The Department of Prints and Drawings comprises more than 120,000 works and is a museum in its own right. The Kunsthalle also runs the 'Museum At Home' initiative where art historians give their expert opinion on paintings (on canvas and wood), drawings and prints for a small fee.

For a totally different theatre experience there's nowhere better than Hamburg, the city with one of the most dynamic and diverse theatre scenes in Germany. And the best time for this is always at the beginning of the new season, when the city's annual Theatre Night gives audiences a whirlwind tour of the world of drama and performance. With a programme featuring 300 events in 40 venues, this is a special night to remember.

On Hamburg Theatre Night, the actors take over the city. Theatres, foyers, bars and even the streets themselves become stages for moving pieces of drama, short stories, tragedies and comedies; for singing, dancing and the spoken word. And in the actors' wake come 16,000 guests, who get around on the 50 shuttle buses, trains and eight riverboats laid on for the event. Once you have your Theatre Night ticket, admission to all the performances is free of charge – which means you'll be criss-crossing the city throughout the evening for cutting-edge theatre, opera, ballet and comedy. The Theatre Night app is a great help in this respect: downloadable free, it contains the complete programme, a comprehensive list of venues, plus all the bus stops en route. Another essential piece of kit is the Hamburg theatre mug, a strictly limited-edition collectors' piece with a new design each year and available for purchase at nine euros. Your mug will be filled with free, fresh coffee at every venue – a great help in getting you get through the night, and keeping you wide awake for the huge closing party on the Reeperbahn!

The Hamburg Cruise Days offer an unforgettable experience in one of Germany's grandest cities, so prepare to be wowed by a cruise event that is by far and away the best. Gaze in awe at the majestic ships and open your heart to the call of the cruise – these are three days devoted to all things maritime, to sumptuous food and quality entertainment. No fewer than seven liners are calling at Hamburg during the festival and will be anchored in the port.

The inaugural event was a success – this was the unanimous verdict on the first Hamburg Cruise Days of summer 2008, when more than 600,000 excited spectators from around the world witnessed the Elbe's transformation into a glittering open-air stage. Every two years since then, the docklands have become a maritime playground for the leisurely exploration of various theme islands: shopping, fashion and design, sport and relaxation, children's activities, markets, music, entertainment and food prepared by the city's best chefs. Experience the enchanting world of cruising on dry land between the two cruise terminals in HafenCity and Altona, or indulge your wanderlust on the water via the fleet of party ships at Hamburg Cruise Night on Friday evening or the grand Hamburg Cruise Days parade on Saturday evening. Another mesmerising highlight is Blue Port by acclaimed lighting designer Michael Batz, who swathes the area from HafenCity to Neumühlen in the colour of the sky, of the sea and of longing.
