Weissenhof Museum in Haus Le Corbusier

An architectural milestone and masterpiece rolled into one, the Weissenhof estate was built in Stuttgart in 1927 as an international building exhibition.

Here, 17 avant-garde architects, among them Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Hans Scharoun, designed cutting-edge solutions for living spaces. Today, Le Corbusier's 'double house' is the site of the Weissenhof Museum, which contains an exhibition on the estate's history alongside original living quarters preserved just as they were in 1927.

Opening times:

Tuesday-Friday 11am-6pm, Saturday & Sunday 10am-6pm

The collections at the State Gallery in Baden-Württemberg's regional capital Stuttgart have been shaped by their roots in Württemberg's history but also by the international approach the gallery has adopted since the Second World War. Opened as the Museum of Fine Arts in 1843, the gallery became the New State Gallery in 1984, occupying a striking new building designed by British architect and Pritzker prize winner James Stirling.

The New State Gallery houses a collection of international standing that spans eight centuries. Art from 1800 to 1900 and works from the 20th century provide the main areas of focus. The 19th century is featured in paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, Anselm Feuerbach, Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne. From the 20th century there are outstanding individual works and important ensembles by Paul Klee, Max Beckmann, Pablo Picasso, Oskar Kokoschka, Willi Baumeister, Oskar Schlemmer, Hans Arp, Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer. Post-1945 art is also represented by works of International Abstraction, Pop Art, Concept Art, Minimalism, Land Art and new movements that have emerged since 1980.
The collection is complemented by works from earlier periods, from Old German Paintings from 1300 to 1550, Italian paintings from 1300 to 1800, Dutch paintings from 1500 to 1700 – including works by Rubens and Rembrandt – through to German paintings of the baroque era.
The Department of Prints and Drawings includes examples from every country in Europe and every artistic era since the Middle Ages.

Every September, Stuttgart hosts the Cannstatter Wasen, Baden-Württemberg's largest festival and one that is ranked as the second-biggest beer festival worldwide after Munich's Oktoberfest. Swabians have a reputation for frugality, but the Cannstatter Wasen shows them in a very different light – as happy, friendly, fun-loving folk with a sense of tradition.

Every year from late September until well into October, hundreds of showmen, breweries and traders set up their tents and stalls at the Wasen, the huge festival grounds in Stuttgart's Neckarpark. Swabian gemütlichkeit and a positively electric party mood in the many beer tents set the Wasen apart from the many other fairs in this region. Millions of visitors join in the excitement, enjoying thrills and spills on the traditional and the modern rides, and savouring a variety of Swabian, German and international food. This is one of Germany's sunniest regions, so wine belongs at this fair just as much as fresh, frothy Württemberg beer, both of which are best enjoyed with friends. Get to the tents early because they soon fill up and close when they reach capacity. Fortunately there are plenty of them, all offering free admission, because everyone wants to have fun at the Wasen, the big, friendly, traditional fair for the whole family.
