Explore the vicinity of Berlin on the 66 Lakes Trail, a large circular hiking route. A hike around the metropolis in the midst of Brandenburg's scenic beauty.

The famous German novelist Theodor Fontane described the area surrounding Berlin 150 years ago. In the 21st century, the best way to go on "Rambles in Brandenburg" is on the 66 Lakes Trail. But not to worry, hikers don't have to do the entire 400 kilometre hiking trail in one go. The 66 Lakes Trail has excellent transport links to the German capital. We can be back in Berlin city centre within 45-60 minutes from almost every stage of the trail. Hikers can combine the excellent 66 Lakes Trail with a thrilling city tour. Even though the Baltic Sea is still far away, water is a major theme on this route. The numerous lakes, marshes, streams and rivers, including the Spree and Havel, amaze us throughout the hike. It has been scientifically proven that hiking along the water's edge makes people happy. Yet there is also a wealth of culture on the 66 Lakes Trail. We venture through Potsdam and marvel at Sanssouci Palace, Cecilienhof Country House and the mini version of Brandenburg Gate. On this route, you can go on a leisurely hike through the lowlands or follow the many sandy uphill paths for panoramas of the fields and meadows. And when we finally return from our hiking day trip, we know that it is true what they say: you don't have to go far to get away on the 66 Lakes Trail.

TIP: from Biesenthal to Wandlitz

Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:

"The stage from Biesenthal to Wandlitz in Barnim Nature Park is packed full of surprises: meadow landscapes, beautiful forests, idyllic bathing lakes, an actual gorge and the stopover in Wandlitz to round it off."
