Colombischlössle Archaeological Museum Freiburg

From the oldest works of art in southern Baden to Medieval Freiburg, the exhibits of international importance at the Archaeological Museum take visitors on a journey through the millennia.

The Neo-Gothic Colombischlössle is home to unique finds from southern Baden that reveal a lot about the way in which people lived and worked from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. Female statuettes dating back 12,000 years and treasures from Iron Age ceremonial tombs from the Rhine and Kaiserstuhl, including the oldest glass bowl to be found north of the Alps, are of global significance. Another important historical item here is a luggage tag from a Roman legionary camp bearing the name of Commander Varus.

Precious burial objects from the Early Middle Ages are particular highlights, including gold-leaf crosses that serve as the first signs of Christianity taking hold in the Upper Rhine region. Visitors can explore these archaeological finds and find out about the way in which people used to live thanks to the many interactive elements of the museum. For example, they can enter a burial chamber, watch 3D simulations and get involved at a number of points along the way. What's more, visitors can stroll through a pretty vine garden on the Colombischlössle grounds and check out local and international wine varieties. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–5 pm
