Lenbach House Munich

The Lenbach House gallery in Munich houses works of Classical Modernism and examples of contemporary art. Its "Blue Rider" collection featuring artwork by the likes of Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter is famous all around the world.

The house was originally built for the "painter prince" Franz von Lenbach during the 19th century. Masterpieces of 19th-century painting and an extensive collection of international contemporary art are on display in the renovated former artist's house and the new extension. There is also a unique collection of artwork by the "Blue Rider" group and a display of paintings from 19th-century Munich. Over the years, the museum has started to specialise in works by Joseph Beuys, with a special exhibition area dedicated to the artist having been set up in Lenbach's old studio.

Lots of contemporary items in particular have been added to the collection of art from after 1945. A theme that runs through all aspects of the collection is artist's rooms, most of which were developed specifically for the Lenbach House. The fascinating interplay of different artistic movements can be explored in the exhibition spaces too. Opening times: Tuesday: 10 am–8 pm, Wednesday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm
