Saarland Museum, Modern Gallery Saarbrücken

The Saarland Museum showcases works of art from the Impressionist era to the present day, presenting the fascinating interplay between French and German trends and movements.

The Modern Gallery is one of the leading museums in the south-west of Germany. The museum's border-side position means that it is perfectly placed to present the interplay between German and French trends and movements through its exhibits. Its collection includes major masterpieces from the 19th century to the present day, including "Little Blue Horse" by Franz Marc, "Brass City" by Max Beckmann and other iconic pieces. Artwork by Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and Emil Nolde can also be seen on display here.

The impressive museum building wasn't completed until 1976 despite the plans being drawn up in 1965. It serves as one example of pioneering museum architecture from the early days of the Federal Republic and has been placed under monumental protection. Since the extension was officially inaugurated in 2017, the Modern Gallery has focused more on contemporary art and there is now a sculpture garden on its southern side hosting works by international artists. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm, Wednesday: 10 am–8 pm
