Spotlights make butterflies flutter across building facades, and thousands of lights project flowers and romantic patterns onto building walls: During the “Festival of Lights” the German capital is immersed in a world of color for ten October evenings. Renowned lighting designers illuminate around 80 monuments, landmarks, and famous streets, including the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral, and Potsdamer Platz. Particularly impressive: the light art installations on Bebelplatz.
Essen Light Festival: the city as an artistic backdrop
Light shows, neon installations, and video projections by international artists transform the city center into an open-air gallery for ten days in early October. Walls shimmer with geometric patterns, lights dance like a ballet on the sidewalks, and water surfaces reflect the colors in ever-changing forms. Particularly striking is the contrast between the old brick buildings and the modern light artworks, which transform the urban space into a labyrinth of color, movement, and perspectives.
Winter Lights in Dortmund: a sea of lights in the park
This light festival warms the heart, as it bathes Westfalenpark in a graceful interplay of light and shadow from early December through early January. Tree canopies, meadows, and ponds become screens for projections that seem to flow in color and motion: here a colorful “tulip field,” there long “luminous snakes,” and behind them mystical water reflections. It goes without saying that the annually changing and often creatively implemented theme - sometimes Pokémon, sometimes dragons - takes center stage.

Every year from late November to early January, millions of points of light enchant the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which majestically towers over Koblenz and the Rhine. Along a roughly two-kilometer-long circular path, projections shimmer across walls and tower facades, wisps of fog envelop stairs and gates in fleeting shapes, and lights reflect off the cobblestones. To ensure you can enjoy these charming and imaginative installations at your leisure, it’s worth planning your visit well in advance.
Island Sparkle on Usedom: one island, many highlights
From Karlshagen to Ahlbeck and from late November to early January: “Island Sparkle” puts the spa towns, seaside villas, promenades, and piers of the Baltic Sea island of Usedom in the spotlight. And how! In the seaside resort of Heringsdorf, for example, a giant star of light sparkles with thousands of points of light; in front of the historic pier in Ahlbeck, a cube projects patterns onto its surroundings; and in the Baltic resort of Koserow, visitors use the moving angel wings as a photo backdrop for Christmas greetings.
Barbarossa Cave World of Lights: spectacular underground gallery
It’s all about what’s inside! Just like in the Kyffhäuser Mountains, where the Barbarossa Cave amazes visitors year-round - but especially so when, in late spring, light artists illuminate the bizarre gypsum formations of the XXL anhydrite cave with projections, lasers, and fog. Particular highlights are the reflections in the underground lakes, which break the colors and patterns into ever-changing shapes. Plus: In some years, there’s a spookily beautiful Halloween special as an added treat.
Lights of Bad Mergentheim: wintertime, lighttime!
From January to March, colorful projections and large light sculptures transform the spa gardens of Bad Mergentheim in northern Baden-Württemberg into a sparkling winter wonderland. In addition to the park illuminations, there are numerous other dazzling events, many of which take place during Advent. These include guided tours with lanterns or flashlights as well as group stargazing sessions. The result is a diverse winter program ranging from markets to candlelit evenings at the Solymar Thermal Baths.
Winter Lights in Erfurt: colorful cheer to combat the winter blues
When creative teams at Egapark combine natural scenery with modern staging to create an atmospheric winter experience, it offers visitors both a stroll and an art experience. After all, between December and early January, a three-kilometer circular path leads through artistically illuminated garden spaces, past glowing figures, video projections, and a water fountain that transforms into a moving screen. Christmas stalls in front of the “Danakil” desert house round out the offerings, as do special summer light weeks.
Mainz Shines - the Late Light Festival: light and music take over the city
Over three September evenings, historic facades, squares, and iconic buildings such as St. Martin’s Cathedral and the State Theater will be brought to life through light and video projections, accompanied by atmospheric music. What makes it special: Students from Mainz University of Applied Sciences design many of the installations themselves, turning the city center into an open stage for light and art. Dozens of offerings from the food and beverage, retail, and (music) culture sectors also ensure a successful overall experience. Free of charge, but by no means a waste of time!
Autumn Lights in Hamm: between nature and modern light art
Thousands of LEDs, along with numerous projections and light art installations, transform Maximilian Park - a central destination in the Westphalian city of Hamm and a pioneer in the conversion of industrial sites - into a delicate sea of lights from mid-October to early November. In addition to trees, paths, and water features, light artists - naturally - also bathe the park’s landmark, the oversized glass elephant, in shifting colors and patterns. Absolutely entertaining!

Nestled amidst the vineyards of Radebeul, the baroque complex of Wackerbarth Castle is a Saxon state winery featuring terraces, a workshop, and sweeping views over the Elbe Valley. During the “Wine & Light” festival, this site - which bills itself as “Europe’s first experiential winery” - transforms between November and February into a stage for light art set among the vines and historic walls. Installations, projections, and illuminated paths guide guests through the vineyards, accompanied by music, wine tastings, and culinary offerings.
