German Historical Museum Berlin

The German Historical Museum takes visitors on a journey through 2,000 years of German history, covering major events, everyday culture and everything in between. Its mission is to inform people about Germany and Europe's entire timeline in a way that is easy to understand.

Located in the Baroque armoury on Unter den Linden, the German Historical Museum recalls major events, such as Charlemagne's conquests, the posting of Luther's theses, the outbreak of the Second World War and the miraculous reunification of Germany. Some 7,000 exhibits are showcased here across 8,000 square metres. A visit to this museum is akin to a journey through time, taking in events from the early Middle Ages to the modern day. The exhibits alternate between objets d'art and items from everyday life to incredible effect. Paintings depicting historical scenes appear beside knight's armour, whilst Vorwerk vacuum cleaners are juxtaposed with East German sheet music.

Rooms looking at the day-to-day lives of different social classes and groups expand upon certain topics and offer a more in-depth insight, with items including alms dishes, the hottest womenswear trends from the 19th century and entry tickets to the Nuremberg trials. Visitors have ample opportunity to explore the past and learn all they need to know about the major events and developments in German history. Opening times: Every day: 10 am–6 pm
