Measuring over 6,000 kilometres in length, the North Sea Cycle Route is the world's longest signposted cycle path. Almost one-sixth of the route (921 kilometres) hugs the German coastline.

Starting off in the Netherlands, it runs along the North Sea coast in Lower Saxony, with the spectacular Wadden Sea and the distinctive saltwater moorland of the Jade Bight. Along the route, Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven provide some urban diversions. The next point of interest on the route is Hamburg, the gateway to the world. The route continues through Schleswig-Holstein, which is characterised by marshland and fens, dykes and inlets. Other main attractions include Westerheversand Lighthouse and Husum, the birthplace of Theodor Fontane, before cyclists pass the tiny Halligen islands as the idyllic German section of the route comes to an end.
