MARTa Herford Bielefeld
The MARTa Herford Museum near Bielefeld showcases contemporary art and creates links between design and architecture. The museum building itself was designed by star architect Frank Gehry
As a museum for contemporary art, MARTa Herford goes one step further than most traditional museums by developing major overview exhibitions and special projects on topics relevant to our modern society. The relatively new collection features more than 400 works of contemporary art, many of which are in a large-scale format.
In line with the museum's focus, the collection also encompasses exceptional works delving into issues in the fields of design and architecture. Room-based works, such as Panamarenko's "Papaver", Cai Guo-Qiang's "Flying Carpet" and Reinhard Mucha's "Halver", also fill the museum, interacting perfectly with Gehry's building design. And the sculptures dotted around the MARTa site are amongst the most important works of art in the whole city. The MARTa Studio in the 19th-century villa next door provides the setting for a varied programme of workshops. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 11 am–6 pm, the first Wednesday of every month: 11 am–9 pm
