Mainz State Museum

The Mainz State Museum, located within the Golden-Ross-Kaserne building complex, is one of the oldest museums in Germany. The collection includes important exhibits depicting the history of art and culture all the way to the present day.

The Mainz State Museum in the city centre is one of the oldest museums in Germany. The Baroque building and modern glass and steel wing opening out onto the inner courtyard combine with the electoral stables to form the charming State Museum complex. Visitors are treated to a collection of historical exhibits ranging from the very beginnings of culture to contemporary manifestations of art.

The exhibition covers: prehistory, the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and Baroque eras, Dutch paintings, 19th-century paintings and 20th-century art. No matter what period visitors are interested in, they can expect plenty of exhibits to touch and explore along with audio stations. Biographies of big personalities provide an introduction to different eras, with a royal burial site and a bedroom from Goethe's time bringing history to life. Opening times: Tuesday 10 am–8 pm, Wednesday to Sunday: 10 am–5 pm
