Museum of Prehistory and Early History Saarbrücken

The Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Saarbrücken looks back on archaeological discoveries from the Saarland's distant past, showcasing the star attractions from the region's State Antiquities Collection.

At the Museum of Prehistory and Early History, visitors can marvel at discoveries from every era from the Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages, including hand axes, Celtic and Roman artefacts, and medieval disc brooches with sparkling stones set in gold. And the collection is constantly growing as new objects are excavated.

Central to the exhibition are the treasures from the tomb of the Celtic Princess of Reinheim, which are amongst the most valuable artefacts of their kind to be found in Germany. Dating back to the year 370 BC, the haul includes beautifully ornate gold jewellery and no end of precious amber and bronze delights. The wonderfully colourful murals depicting gladiators in battle from a grand Roman villa in Mechern are on another level entirely, though. The exhibits in the collection held by the Museum of Prehistory and Early History are put on display in two connected buildings on Schlossplatz square in Saarbrücken (the Kreisständehaus and the Castle Church). Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm, Wednesday: 10 am–8 pm
