Potsdam, Chinese tea house in Sanssouci Park

Retreat for a king and philosopher

Frederick the Great of Prussia was a key figure in the Enlightenment but stuck rigidly to his absolutist views. The magnificent Sanssouci Palace and Park, which he had built up from nothing on land near Potsdam, is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble.

The Chinese House in the deer park at Sanssouci is a delightful example of Chinoiserie, the fashion for all things Chinese, from the 18th century. Built for Frederick the Great, this exotic pavilion contains beautiful paintings and exquisite porcelain that accentuate its oriental charm.
