Traveling Through the Country at a Leisurely Pace

Germany offers many ways to explore cities and regions even without your own car.

  • Long-distance travel

A rail network spanning approximately 40,000 kilometers with around 5,700 stations makes traveling throughout the country very convenient and affordable. The main provider for rail travel is Deutsche Bahn, though trains operated by other private and public providers also run on the tracks. Bus travel is another affordable alternative.

  • Public Transportation

The public transit network in Germany is well-developed and ensures short travel distances. In addition, many cities and regions offer overnight guests free or discounted tickets for regional transit in the form of a GuestCard. Otherwise, the affordable Deutschlandticket provides free travel on local transit throughout the country.

  • E-Mobility

If you do decide to take a road trip, car rental companies are available in all major cities. Many of them offer electric or hybrid cars in addition to gasoline-powered vehicles. There are currently more than 100,000 charging stations with over 200,000 individual charging points for these vehicles. You can find an up-to-date map of public charging stations for electric cars in Germany here: www.bundesnetzagentur.de

  • Bicycling

Those who travel by bike experience their vacation destination up close and in their own way. Around 100,000 kilometers of bike paths crisscross the country, and about 600 themed routes invite you to go on discovery tours to suit every taste. Within cities, green bike signs point the way to the nearest attraction.
