Saxony-Anhalt is diverse and full of contrasts. The Harz Mountains, with the Brocken as the highest peak in northern Germany, stand for mythical forests, nature-rich hiking trails and impressive summit views. The Middle Elbe region captivates visitors with its wide floodplains, river landscapes and tours along the Elbe Cycle Route. In the Saale-Unstrut region, vineyards, winding river valleys and historic towns alternate. The World Heritage Region Anhalt-Dessau-Wittenberg brings together architecture and garden art and leads visitors to the traces of the Reformation. In the north, proud Hanseatic towns and vast landscapes shape the Altmark. The lively cities of the state reveal further facets: Magdeburg impresses with its cathedral and modern architecture, Halle with the Nebra Sky Disk and a vibrant cultural scene, and Dessau-Roßlau with the Bauhaus and the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm.
UNESCO World Heritage in Saxony-Anhalt
Castles, palaces, cathedral churches, garden landscapes, picturesque old towns and remarkable architecture shape the cultural heritage of Saxony-Anhalt. This wide and diverse spectrum forms the basis for a uniquely high density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites within Germany. Five outstanding cultural monuments, complemented by the Nebra Sky Disk, important historical documents and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Middle Elbe, are protected here by UNESCO. This unique concentration makes Saxony-Anhalt a true heartland of world culture, where cultural enjoyment and natural experiences are closely intertwined.

Nature & Outdoor Activities in Saxony-Anhalt
Nature lovers and active holidaymakers will also find ideal conditions in Saxony-Anhalt. Whether cycling tours along the popular Elbe Cycle Route, challenging routes in the Harz, canoe trips through the Saale-Unstrut wine region or horseback riding holidays in the Altmark – the region’s varied landscapes offer something for everyone. A total of 18 long-distance cycle routes cross the state, including family-friendly trails as well as demanding routes for mountain bikers and road cyclists. Hikers particularly enjoy the dense network of trails in the Harz, with highlights such as the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg or the paths along the “Green Belt,” the former inner-German border.
