Mecklenburg-Vorpommern - Room to Roam

Located in northern Germany between the cities of Berlin and Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern attracts visitors with around 2,000 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline, just as many sparkling blue lakes and a third of the region as protected nature. Wide beaches, tranquil forests and lively towns create an environment that gives travellers space – for clear horizons, surprising perspectives and experiences that will easily remain in their memories.

Fine sandy beaches, white villas of the spa architecture and clear coastlines characterise the first impression. On Rügen, white chalk cliffs rise above the Baltic Sea, while on Usedom, wide beaches await and Fischland-Darß-Zingst between the Baltic Sea and Bodden impresses with its unique play of light. In the hinterland, the Mecklenburg Lake District opens up with over 1,000 lakes, including the Müritz, Germany's largest inland lake – an Eldorado for water sports fans.

Around 30 percent of the state is under nature conservation. Three national parks, three UNESCO biosphere reserves and seven nature parks offer places where nature can be experienced in its original rhythm. In the ancient beech forests of the Müritz National Park and the Jasmund National Park – both UNESCO World Heritage Sites – birdsong and wind mingle among the tall trunks.

More than 6,000 kilometres of cycle paths and nine long-distance cycle routes, such as the Baltic Sea Cycle Route and the Berlin–Copenhagen Cycle Route, lead through forests, villages and along lakes and coasts – often for hours on end and with few differences in altitude.

Culturally, many doors open: small fishing villages, residential cities such as Schwerin with its UNESCO residence ensemble and old Hanseatic cities with tall brick churches. Rostock combines urban life with a harbour atmosphere, while Greifswald has a young and creative vibe. Wismar and Stralsund bear the UNESCO title and showcase impressive architecture. Over 2,000 castles and manor houses tell the story of the dukes of Mecklenburg – as museums, stages or hotels. In the artists' colonies Ahrenshoop, Schwaan and on Hiddensee, it becomes clear how the landscape inspired artists such as Caspar David Friedrich.

At the end of the day, the taste of the region shapes the moment: fresh fish, sea buckthorn products, regional beers and handicrafts made of amber and ceramics create lasting memories.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern combines clear natural motifs, lively cities and authentic cultural sites – a region full of spaces that tell stories.
